What We Do

Your Fixer and Production Company on the Ground in Laos

Laos is one of Southeast Asia's most visually compelling and least-filmed production markets. From the Mekong riverfront and French colonial streetscapes of Vientiane to the UNESCO-protected old town, gilded Buddhist temples, and morning alms ceremonies of Luang Prabang — the country offers a visual world that international brands and broadcasters are only beginning to discover. Navigating it requires someone who already knows the permit system, the local crew network, and the logistics of working across two cities with different permit authorities, different visual characters, and different operational realities.

Alchemist Productions has been operating across Southeast Asia for over 15 years, with established fixer and production experience across Laos. We manage Ministry of Information filming permits, UNESCO heritage zone approvals in Luang Prabang, vetted local crew, and every element of on-the-ground production logistics — from a single accountable point of contact. For full production services in each city, see our production company Vientiane and production company Luang Prabang pages.

What We Do

What Our Laos Fixer & Production Service Covers

Every logistical and operational element of your Laos shoot, managed by a team with 15 years of Southeast Asia experience.

Ministry of Information Permits

All commercial productions in Laos require a filming permit from the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism. Additional approvals are required for religious sites, government buildings, and heritage areas. We manage the full permit process for productions across Vientiane and Luang Prabang, including location-specific clearances — and advise on realistic lead times from the outset.

UNESCO Heritage Zone Access (Luang Prabang)

Filming within Luang Prabang's UNESCO-protected heritage zone requires approvals from local heritage authorities in addition to Ministry of Information permits. Temple interiors, the royal palace grounds, and the Tak Bat alms-giving route have additional access requirements. We manage the full heritage permit chain and recommend 6–8 weeks of pre-production lead time for productions requiring heritage zone access.

Local Crew & Production Support

Access our vetted network of Laos-based producers, cinematographers, sound recordists, fixers, and production assistants across Vientiane and Luang Prabang — all experienced on international commercial and documentary productions. Laos has a smaller crew pool than Thailand or Vietnam, and the right relationships are essential.

Location Scouting

From Vientiane's Mekong riverfront, That Luang, and French colonial streetscapes to Luang Prabang's temple network, the Nam Khan and Mekong river confluence, Kuang Si waterfalls, and the highland landscape of northern Laos — we scout and secure locations with full recce reports and permit status on every option.

Equipment & Logistics

We source cameras, lenses, and grip equipment from trusted suppliers in Vientiane, and advise on gear that needs to be transported from Bangkok or Hanoi. We manage customs clearance, inter-city transport between Vientiane and Luang Prabang, accommodation, and crew scheduling from a single point of contact.

Cross-Border Thailand–Laos Productions

Productions based in Thailand that want to extend into Laos are something we manage through our Thailand base. Vientiane is accessible from Bangkok via the Nong Khai–Vientiane Friendship Bridge, and from Chiang Rai via the northern border for productions heading to Luang Prabang. We handle permits, equipment movement, and logistics on both sides of the border from a single team.

Where We Work in Laos

Our fixer network covers both of Laos's primary production cities — and the spectacular landscape between them.

That Luang golden stupa at sunset, Vientiane, Laos

Vientiane

Laos's capital combines French colonial architecture, gilded Buddhist temples, and a Mekong riverside character unlike any other Southeast Asian capital. That Luang, Patuxai, Wat Si Saket, and the colonial riverside promenade are all within easy reach. Production costs are among the lowest in the region, and the city is directly accessible from Bangkok via the Friendship Bridge.

Luang Prabang

A UNESCO World Heritage city in northern Laos — one of Southeast Asia's most extraordinary production locations. The ancient royal city's Buddhist temples, the daily Tak Bat alms-giving ceremony, the Nam Khan and Mekong river confluence, Kuang Si waterfalls, and the surrounding highland landscape make it a destination that international productions actively seek and relatively few have filmed.

Common Questions

Film Fixer Laos: FAQ

What permits are required to film commercially in Laos?

Commercial productions in Laos require a filming permit from the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism. Additional approvals are required for filming at religious sites, government buildings, and heritage areas. Luang Prabang's UNESCO-protected old town requires permits from local heritage authorities on top of the Ministry approval. Drone operations require separate clearance from Laos aviation authorities. We manage the full permit process for productions in both Vientiane and Luang Prabang, and recommend 4–6 weeks of lead time for Vientiane and 6–8 weeks for productions requiring Luang Prabang heritage zone access.

What is the difference between your fixer service and full production company service?

As a fixer, we provide the local infrastructure for international teams arriving with their own director and creative — permits, crew, locations, transport, and on-set coordination. As a full production company, we take the brief from script to delivery, managing creative development and all production elements in-house. We offer both in Laos, and many clients start with a fixer engagement before moving to full-service production for subsequent projects.

Can you film the Tak Bat alms-giving ceremony in Luang Prabang?

The morning Tak Bat ceremony — in which monks collect alms from residents along the UNESCO heritage streetscape — is one of Luang Prabang's most iconic visual sequences and can be filmed commercially with appropriate permits and protocols. The ceremony requires a respectful production approach: appropriate distance, the right equipment, and coordination with local heritage authorities. We have managed commercial productions involving the Tak Bat and can advise on what is and isn't possible within the heritage authority's guidelines.

How do production costs in Laos compare to Thailand or Vietnam?

Laos is typically 35–50% less expensive than Thailand for equivalent production scope, and comparable to or cheaper than Vietnam outside the major hubs. Local crew rates, equipment rental, location fees, and accommodation all reflect Laos's significantly lower cost base. The trade-off is a smaller crew pool and less readily available specialist equipment — which sometimes needs to be sourced from Bangkok or Hanoi. For productions where budget efficiency and visual distinctiveness both matter, Laos is a strong combination.

Can you manage a production across both Vientiane and Luang Prabang?

Yes — multi-city productions combining Vientiane and Luang Prabang are something we plan and manage regularly. The two cities are a one-hour domestic flight apart, with an eight-hour road journey as an alternative, or the Laos–China Railway for a scenic four-to-five-hour connection. We coordinate multi-location Laos productions from a single point of contact, managing permits, crew, and logistics across both cities.
