How We Shot a Hollywood Film for Half the Price in Thailand: The "Contra" Story
We did it. We really, truly did it. We made a Hollywood-quality action film, “Contra,” for half the price, and we did it all in Thailand. It sounds almost too good to be true, doesn’t it? But trust me, it’s not a pipe dream – it’s the result of strategic planning, incredible local talent, and a whole lot of grit.
Contra is the directorial debut of Emmy nominated producer Artisha Mann-Cooper (Eyes in the Trees), starring Kal Penn (Designated Survivor), Booboo Stewart (X-Men: Days of Future Past), and Nicole Elizabeth Berger (Runt), is a thriller that brings you to the brutal underground world of high-stakes chess, where every move might be your last. Production services in Thailand provided by Alchemist Productions and H1 Films.
From the very beginning, our vision for “Contra” was ambitious. We wanted pulse-pounding action, breathtaking visuals, and a story that resonated. The problem? Our budget, while respectable, wasn’t in the same league as the tentpole blockbusters we admired. We knew we needed to find a way to maximize every dollar without compromising on the cinematic experience. That’s when we started looking east, specifically to Thailand.

Why Thailand? The Secret Sauce of Savings
The decision to shoot “Contra” in Thailand wasn’t a random choice. The director had previously shot in Thailand before and knew the dollar would go a long way. It was a calculated move based on several key factors that ultimately allowed us to stretch our budget further than we ever thought possible:
- Cost-Effective Crews and Talent: This was perhaps the most significant saving. Thailand boasts a highly skilled and experienced film industry, cultivated over decades of international productions. The local crews are professional, efficient, and incredibly passionate, and their rates are significantly more competitive than those in traditional Hollywood production hubs. We found exceptional cinematographers, gaffers, grips, and art department personnel who delivered top-tier work without the top-tier price tag.
- Diverse and Stunning Locations: “Contra” required a variety of settings, from bustling cityscapes to serene beaches, and doubling Thailand for an American city. Thailand offers an astonishing array of diverse and visually rich locations, all relatively close to each other. This minimized our travel time and expenses between shoots, a substantial saving that often goes overlooked. Plus, the sheer beauty of the natural landscapes and unique architecture provided a built-in production value that would have cost a fortune to replicate elsewhere.
- Excellent Infrastructure and Equipment: You might imagine that shooting in a less conventional location means compromising on equipment, but that wasn’t our experience at all. Bangkok, in particular, has state-of-the-art rental houses offering the latest cameras, lighting, and grip equipment. We had access to everything we needed to achieve our visual goals, often at a fraction of the cost of renting in Los Angeles or London.
- Supportive Film Commission and Streamlined Permitting: The Thailand Film Office was incredibly supportive throughout our pre-production and shooting phases. Their assistance in navigating permits and regulations was invaluable, making the entire process much smoother and less time-consuming than we’ve experienced elsewhere. This efficiency translates directly into cost savings by reducing delays and bureaucratic hurdles.
- The Power of the Exchange Rate: Let’s be honest, the favorable exchange rate between the Thai Baht and major currencies like the US Dollar played a significant role. Every dollar we spent in Thailand simply went further, allowing us to allocate more resources to on-screen talent, special effects, and other critical production elements.
Beyond the Numbers: The Intangibles
While the financial advantages were undeniable, it wasn’t just about the money. There were intangible benefits that contributed to “Contra’s” success:
- The “Can-Do” Attitude: The Thai film community has an incredible “can-do” attitude. No request seemed too big or too complex. Their resourcefulness and dedication were truly inspiring.
- Cultural Immersion: Our cast and crew had the opportunity to experience the vibrant culture of Thailand, which added a unique dimension to the entire production process. This positive atmosphere permeated the set and undoubtedly contributed to the final product.
Was It Easy? No. Was It Worth It? Absolutely.
Making a film, regardless of location, is never easy. There were challenges, of course. Navigating cultural nuances, adapting to different working styles, and the sheer logistics of moving a large production team across continents required constant effort and problem-solving.
But looking back at “Contra,” seeing the incredible action sequences, the stunning cinematography, and the powerful performances, we know every challenge was worth it. We proved that it’s possible to achieve Hollywood-level production quality without the Hollywood-level price tag. Thailand wasn’t just a shooting location; it was a partner in our creative endeavor, allowing us to bring “Contra” to life in a way that truly exceeded our expectations.
So, if you’re an independent filmmaker with big dreams and a smart budget, I urge you to look beyond the traditional. The world is full of incredible possibilities, and for us, Thailand was the key to unlocking the full potential of “Contra.” We can’t wait for you to see it.
We work in the best industry in the world. We get to travel and tell stories, that hopefully resonates with viewers. So while you’re stressing about making the day, building the schedule, wrangling crew, and keeping the budget in check. Just remember, we are really blessed to be doing what we do. So show up with gratitude and remember to have fun!
