Challenges Filming Thailand

As one of Thailand’s leading production companies, Alchemist Productions has witnessed it all. Filming in Thailand can be a remarkable experience, but without careful planning, it can also turn into a challenging ordeal. In this blog post, we’ll share insights into the common hurdles filmmakers encounter in Thailand—and how to overcome them for a successful shoot.

Language & Cultural Barrier

Filming in Thailand comes with its own set of hurdles, and the biggest one is definitely the language barrier. Right along with that, getting a grip on the local culture can be tricky too. It’s easy for things to get mixed up in translation—like saying tomato when you mean potato. The team found some solid ways to tackle this. It’s super helpful to have a translator handy. Saying things three times to make sure they’re understood is a real game-changer. Keep your words simple and to the point. Now, let’s talk culture. Treat filming in Thailand like you’re a guest at a friend’s house. An open mind is your best friend. Sometimes things won’t make sense, but that’s just how it rolls here. Stay cool, keep smiling, and never fly off the handle in front of the crew. Thai folks have a knack for handling stuff gently, and getting mad might just send the crew packing.

Honesty is not always the Best Policy

Yep, we said it. In the West, we prefer direct, honest opinions, no sugar coating. In Thailand, that can land you in hot water. Now we’re not saying you can’t be truthful in your dealings, we’re saying you need to learn how to finesse your delivery in order to get the results you want. As a foreigner, you’re going find this almost impossible to do. So lean in to your local producer who’s got many years of experiencing honing this craft.

Personal Relationships Above Meritrocacy

In Thailand, as in much of Asia, personal relationships and face-to-face meetings are central to business dealings. Simply calling or emailing to secure a filming location often won’t get you far—you may find yourself waiting endlessly for a response. Instead, work with a local location manager who has the right connections and can navigate the process effectively.

Keep It Simple

Use one page contracts with simple language for contracts and releases. In Thailand, business transactions are done fast and simple. You risk losing the deal if your contracts are longwinded and difficult to understand. We’ve got you covered. Our contracts and releases are in English and Thai and tweaked to get the best results. Get in touch if you need localized production templates.

Cash is King

Whilst Thailand is tech savvy, local vendors and small businesses prefer to be paid in cash. So be sure to keep some petty cash with you.

Work with Vetted Crews

Don’t bother posting on facebook for crews. Facebook groups are a cesspool of everyone from their mama and papa telling you they’re qualified for the job without having real production experience. It’s a hit or miss, so we avoid hiring through social media. Instead do a google search and you’ll find reputable production companies  in Thailand who are qualified and experienced to do the job. In fact, we’re one of them!
